It gets rather cold and rainy in the winter, and really hot (especially Andalucía and Barcelona) during the summer. Everything is more expensive in the summer, and wherever you go, for reasons that should be obvious, it's busier in the summer. If the only time you can go is summer, the earlier the better. There's enough information on travelling Eurpoe without the need for a tour guide.Of course, "getting lost" moments are the most memorable parts of trips. I could write pages on my one-day "getting lost" adventure to Waterloo and how it was the best part of my last trip to Europe!I think it all depends on your personality. If you would prefer as much as possible that things "go right" or "according to schedule" then best to join a tour group.
